Panchakki, Ajanta and Ellora Caves Overview

Panchakki, located in the historical city of Aurangabad, Maharashtra, is an ancient water-powered flour mill complex housing a mosque, garden and a reservoir. It is also known as the ‘water mill of the saints’, because the mill was dedicated to the memory of the great Sufi saint, Baba Shah Musafir. Panch aki was built during the reign of Mughal Empire in 1694 by Ibrahim Khan in memory of Baba Shah Musafir, who was one of the most revered Sufi saints.At Panchakki, Visitors can explore the well-preserved complex which gives a glimpse into medieval engineering. The complex consists of a big mill building, a water reservoir, several ponds and a beautiful garden.

Panchakki is an example of the engineering marvel of the Mughal era, with its water flowing technology which was used to completely irrigate the region with water from the nearby Bhadra River. Panchakki has been equipped with five water wheels, or ‘pulleys’, and a sophisticated network of waterways to provide the water needed to operate the mill.Adjacent to Panchakki is the famous Ajanta and Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Explore these ancient caves, which date back to 6th century AD and were carved out of solid rocks. Visitors can observe intricate carvings and sculptures which portrays the rich cultural heritage of the region.
