Khandagiri Caves, Jagannath Puri Overview

The renowned Khandagiri Caves, also known as Udayagiri Caves, are exemplary specimens of architecture and sculptures from the historical times. Located in the beautiful city of Jagannath Puri in Orissa, India, these Jain caves are over 2000 years old and have a great historical and religious significance.The Khandagiri Caves are hewn out of single rock formations and have as many as forty six caves. About thirty five of these caves contain intricate carvings of Jain figures and inscriptions, representing Jain Tirthankaras and other symbols. These carvings are believed to be from 185 BC and are therefore some of the oldest carvings in the region. Besides, these caves also feature a large number of inscriptions in the Brahmi script, providing an insight into ancient Jain teachings. The names of these caves are derived from the Ranapuri language, which denotes the original settlers of the region.The most remarkable features about Khandagiri Caves are, however, the architecture and the stone carvings that adorn the walls and pillars in the caves.

The ceilings of the caves are engraved with designs reminiscent of the medieval times and intricate sculpture work covers almost all the walls. A few of the caves also possess small ponds, believed to have been built for priestly bathing rituals.Khandagiri Caves provide a great attraction for tourists and pilgrims alike who visit Jagannath Puri.
