Mahabaleshwar Temple Overview

The Mahabaleshwar Temple, situated in Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra, India, is a renowned and ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and known as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India. The temple was constructed in a unique "Hemadpanthi" style architecture - a traditional style of architecture used mostly in temples in Maharashtra. It is believed that this temple was once a part of the great temples of South India that were destroyed by the Portuguese.The entrance of the temple is through a long stairway, after which the visitor will come across a Shiva Lingam on the left side and two idols of Lord Ganapati on the right side. The temple is in the middle of an open courtyard, which allows devotees to seek blessings and perform rituals peacefully and conveniently.The main gateway of the temple is an impressive structure resembling the entrance of a fort, implying the dedication of the believers towards the Lord. Inside the main chamber, two large Shiv Lingams are encircled by big metal bells and lamps.

This entrance chamber is also adorned with various statues of gods, goddesses and manying almirahs that contain the legendary weapons of Lord Shiva.The temple also has a tall spire (shikhar) on top of it, which is said to have been built in the 17th century by the Marathas.
