Trevor's Tank, Mount Abu Overview

Trevor's Tank is an artificial breeding spot for crocodiles, located 5 kilometres from the town of Mount Abu, India. This man-made lake was an initiative taken up by the local people to conserve and protect the existing population of Slender-snouted Crocodiles in the region.

It was developed in 2006 after Trevor Norton, an avid wildlife photographer, noticed a growing abundance of crocodiles in the region, and thought that a breeding spot in the middle of town would help preserve their numbers. The Trevor's Tank is a perfect safe-haven for the crocodiles and other wildlife.

It provides an ideal habitat for the crocodiles as it has all essential elements such as tropical vegetation, shallow waters and a large marshy region. The site also provides plenty of food sources for the crocodiles such as catfish, frogs, crabs and other invertebrates. With its warm, humid climate and abundant resources, the area has become the ideal breeding spot for the endangered species. To ensure the safety and protection of the crocodiles, a perimeter fencing is set up around the lake. With an adequate safety net for the crocodiles, they can thrive and reproduce in the tank with minimal human interference. The tank has also been cleaned and de-weeded regularly to provide an optimal and safe environment for the Crocodiles. The banks of the tank have also been cleared and levelled to maximize the growth of vegetation and to benefit the other aquatic species in the area. The Trevor's Tank project serves as an example of how human initiative can play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance. With its thriving and diverse species, the tank serves as a testament to the importance of conservation and community development. By taking conscious steps to protect the endangered crocodiles, a better future lies ahead for the fragment of the Slender-Snouted Crocodile population present in the area.
