Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, Nepal Overview

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWLR), located in the southeastern corner of Nepal, is an important bird watching paradise and a must-see destination for capturing vibrant flora and fauna. Its position, a flat stretch of land which lies within the Sapta-Koshi river system, is home to a variety of unique wetlands, grasslands, mudflats and marshes.

Much of the KTWLR is densely vegetated with a unique type of vegetative formation, known as the Terai grassland formation. This grassland mosaic, created by the erosive influence of the Koshi River, gives rise to a range of amazing wildlife. An abundance of wildlife inhabits the area, making it a prime spot in Nepal for birdwatchers and eco-tourists alike.

With more than 488 species of birds, KTWLR offers extensive opportunities for birding, including seeing rare and endemic species from the wetlands. The region is also home to over 60 species of mammals, including wild water buffalo, rhino, hog deer, fishing cats, gaur, monkeys, jackals, otters and wild boar. Moreover, KTWLR is the only place in Nepal where one can experience some of the country’s most breathtaking and alluring aquatic species, such as the endangered Ganges River Dolphin. The area is also home to various species of reptiles and fishes, while its marshes, muddy banks and grasslands are home to an array of unique flora. The native grasses and wildflowers are living reminders of the area’s former days as a grassland mosaic and stand proud as part of the lush landscape. In addition, over 4,000 hectares of the KTWLR are covered in a mosaic of forests, which act as barriers between the various habitats and streams. Flanked by the beautiful Lumbini and Annapurna National Parks, the KTWLR is considered one of the best bird watching spots in Nepal, offering a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere for visitors. Aside from avid bird watching, visitors can explore the area’s many trails, enjoy the wildlife, or simply take a peaceful, soul-calming stroll to take in the views. With its unique landscapes and range of vibrant wildlife, a visit to the KTWLR is a must-do for anyone looking to experience the beauty of nature in Nepal.
