Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, Nepal Overview

pageShuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve is the first national park in Nepal and is home to a wealth of magnificent wildlife, including tigers, elephants, and exotic birds.

Situated on the west side of the Mahendra Highway in the southwest corner of Kanchanpur district, the protected area has an area of 305 sq. kilometers and covers an extension of two lower basins of the Mohana and Sobha rivers. The reserve provides the perfect habitat for the Bengal tiger, wild elephant, and one-horned rhinoceros. It is also known for its remarkable variety of tropical birds, such as the foothill duppoor parakeet, gray peacock pheasant, western tragopan, and great slaty woodpecker. The Shuklaphanta continuously records the presence of 181 bird species and 220 butterfly species, making it a paradise for nature lovers.Apart from wildlife, visitors can admire the reserve's abundant vegetation. The deciduous forest is composed mainly of Khingan, sal, and grasslands, while the subtropical forests are mostly covered by hardwood trees and shrubs. The incredible flora and fauna in the reserve can be admired year-round, but the best time to visit is during the winter, when the reserve has the highest probability of big cats' population. The reserve also has several tourist activities to offer, such as elephant rides and wildlife safaris.

Elephant back riding is a unique opportunity to get up close to wildlife, while a full-day safari will take you to the core area of the reserve, allowing you to explore the forest and view the endangered species. Other activities include boating and angling on the Mohana River, as well as the opportunity to explore the network of hiking trails that run through the reserve. The reserve's proximity to the Mahendra Highway makes it easily accessible from major cities, and it is fairly affordable for visitors living in Nepal. Whether it is birding, wildlife sightings, or leisurely walks inside a pristine protected natural environment, Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve offers something for everyone.
