Rumtek, Sikkim Overview

Rumtek Monastery located in Sikkim, India is one of the most prominent and beautiful Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the world. It is the home of the Karmapa, the head of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, and is known for its intricate architecture, serene ambiance and spiritual significance. In the mid-20th century, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa spent over 10 years in exile in Sikkim and recognized the Rumtek site as the principal seat of his lineage. During this time, a major construction project to expand the original construction was initiated with the support of Indian government and local Sikkimese people. Today, Rumtek Monastery is a major pilgrimage destination for followers of the Tibetan Buddhist faith and it is also a site of immense historical and spiritual significance. The monastery consists of three main prayer halls, residential quarters for monks, a library, and a number of other areas. The main prayer hall is the throne room of the 16th Karmapa and it houses the sacred Black Hat of the Karmapa lineage. The inner sanctum of the main prayer hall is a three-dimensional mandala and it consists of various statues of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and various relics of the past Karmapas.
