Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple, South Goa Overview

The Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple is an ancient 12th-century temple that is located in the picturesque valley of Vaghdhei, in South Goa. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this historically significant temple is renowned for magnificently carved stone portals and its unique Hemadpanthi architectural style. This temple symbolises the state's rich and glorious past. Dating back to 12th century, this majestic temple is the only structure devoted to Lord Shiva that has survived from the era of Kadamba dynasty rulers in Goa. What is remarkable about the temple is mysterious manner of its construction.

Experts are still trying to unravel the mystery as to how the factions of the Kadamba Dynasty were able to carve such intricate patterns in the stones they used to erect this building against all odds nature threw at them.

Visitors can admire the historical and religious significance that the temple holds. The complex includes two ancient temples devoted to Lord Shiva with external walls adorned with various carvings. One can find intricate figures of Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, Ganesh and the Goddess. Moving into the interior of the temple, visitors can view images of the bull - Lord Shiva's vehicle (an element of worship in Hinduism) that is present near the central shrine. The walls, lintels and doorframes are adorned with intricate sculptures of various Gods and Goddesses such as Rama, Parvati, Ganesha, Karthikeya, Kubera, Durga and others. Inside the shrine, there is a 5-foot tall image of Lord Shiva. Apart from its religious significance, this temple also offers breathtaking scenic views. Perched atop a steep hill, the temple is surrounded by lush green hills and a picturesque mountain backdrop making it a destination not to miss out on while exploring South Goa. The temple opens at 6 am and closes at 9 pm making it an ideal spot to appreciate the beauty of Goa and its spiritual peace.
