Shalimar Bagh, Srinagar Overview

Located in the picturesque valley of Kashmir, Shalimar Bagh, meaning “The Abode of Love”, is one of the most iconic Mughal gardens in India. Originally established in 1619 by Emperor Jahangir, it is the social and cultural pride of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.Sprawling across the northeast side of the mesmerising Dal Lake, Shalimar Bagh embodies the magnificence of Mughal architecture.

The garden is composed of three terraces, each representing a different division of life. The first terrace, Bagh-e-Bahu, is enclosed by tall masonry walls and cypress trees. It is dotted with elegant pavilions and a glorious fountain, called Ranhen-e-Kohsar. The second terrace, Bagh-e-Minar, is framed by trees and shrubs and is adorned with numerous fountains. The gorgeous lotus pond at this terrace has a lighthouse which is lit in the evenings. The topmost terrace, Bagh-e- Jawahar, showcases artfully arranged flowerbeds, green lawns and fruit-bearing trees.Shalimar Bagh is a perfect epitome of love, nature and leisure. With its tranquil setting, beautiful architecture, exotic flora and fountains, it is a treat to explore and enjoy for its visitors.
