Diu Museum, Daman and diu Overview

Diu Museum, Daman and Diu is a unique museum that is located inside a former Church which has now been transformed. Located in the Union Territory of Daman and Diu, the Diu Museum is home to a wide variety of collections of wooden carvings, statues, idols and shadow clocks, amongst other artefacts. The Museum is noted for being one of the few places where the remnants of the Portuguese colonial and pre-colonial history can be witnessed.

Walking through this museum, visitors can experience the bygone era of when the Europeans first arrived along the shores of Daman and Diu. The main attraction of Diu Museum is the wooden carvings. These precious wood art objects were created during the era of the Portuguese conquerors and include religious artifacts, architecture designs, and sculptures. Along with this, the museum is also home to many traditional idols, conceptually depicting the goddesses and gods of Indian mythology. Moreover, the Diu Museum also hosts the grand shadow clocks, or horodas, as they are known in Konkani. These masterpieces of metal craftsmanship and ingenuity are unique in architecture and design and stand as reminders of the Portuguese era.

Another impressive item that is displayed in the museum is the Torre d’Imperator, a 20-foot tall armillary sphere which is a symbol of Portugal’s naval superiority. Diu Museum provides visitors the opportunity to take a trek down memory lane and visit the journeys of the Portuguese era. Its unique collections of wooden carvings, statues, idols and shadow clocks, amongst other artefacts, make it a must-visit for everyone, whether or not of Portuguese descent.
