Pratapgad Fort, Mahabaleshwar Overview

Pratapgad Fort is a historical fortification located near Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra, India. It is renowned for its association with the Maratha king Shivaji Maharaj and is considered to be one of the most important forts in the state. Situated at the mouth of the Javli Valley, Pratapgad Fort stands 2,531 feet above sea level, commanding a panoramic view of the glorious Sahyadris mountain range.

The mountain covers a huge area of 19 acres and the fortifications have walls that are as high as 25 feet.The fort was built in 1656 CE by the Maratha ruler Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, originally under the name of ‘Fort of Dignity’ due to its strategic importance. It is renowned for its role in the Battle of Pratapgad, in which Shivaji Maharaj defeated the Mughal General Afzal Khan. As a result, Shivaji earned the title of ‘Eternal Hero of Maharashtra’. The fort still contains a shrine consecrated to Afzal Khan, in an effort to honour the dead general.Today, Pratapgad Fort is a popular tourist destination due to its historical significance and sweeping views. Visitors can travel up the mountain by road or follow the designated trekking path starting near the village of Parit. Travellers will pass through dense forests before arriving at the main gates of the fort. There is plenty to explore here, as the fort contains magnificent structures such as Bhavani Temple, Amrit Sagar, Jain Temple, cannon, Mortar, and various water-storage tanks.
