Hadimba Temple, Manali Overview

The Hadimba Temple in Manali is an ancient sanctuary located in the heart of the Himalayan Mountains.

Built in the 16th century, this temple is a tribute to the legendary characters of the Hindu epic, Mahabharata. It is dedicated to the wife of Bhima, the legendary hero who features in the Mahabharata. The sanctum is situated on a platform split with four levels which symbolizes the four distinct Himalayan regions. The entire temple is made of wood, carved exquisitely with the architecture reflecting the knowledge and skills of the local artisans of that era. The walls are adorned with intricate sculptures of various gods and goddesses in Hindu mythology. The entrance of the temple is designed in the form of a four-story pagoda. Though the entire structure is made of deodar wood, the entire ceiling is supported by a single stone. Visitors are welcomed by an open courtyard filled with rows of pine trees. The coronation point of the temple, situated on the right-hand side of the door, displays a eight-foot-tall image of Hadimba, flanked by two lion-like statues. Apart from that, visitors can also find small statues of Ganesh and Hanuman around the courtyard of the temple. Hadimba Temple is an important monument that represents the historical, cultural and spiritual legacy of Manali.

It has been sanctified and worshipped by the local people for centuries. This temple is also a popular destination among tourists and devotees alike due to its rustic charm, peaceful ambience and the religious significance it holds. Every year, the Hadimba festival is celebrated in the temple precincts wherein people from different parts of the country come together to witness grand processions, enjoy local music and dance performances and take part in worship rituals. Hadimba Temple in Manali is not only a popular pilgrimage spot but also a symbol of dedication and devotion amongst devotees.
