Situated within the Himalayas, the George Everest House is a grandeur relic of the colonial era located in the popular resort town of Mussoorie, Uttrakhand.

Built between 1830 and 1843 during the British Raj in India, the residence was the home and observatory of Sir George Everest, Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843.

Mussoorie was his choice of residence for the establishment of a Tibetan-measuring or 'geodetic' operation. With the popularization of the house amongst the locals, it was visited by many renowned public figures over the years, such as Mahatma Gandhi, the famous Indian leader, and the former Prime Ministers of India.Perched atop an elevation of 7000 feet, the George Everest House provides 360-degree magnificent views of the far-reaching mountains. The star attraction of the place is the grand Victorian architectural structure which is surrounded by vast lush greenery, and offers panoramic views of the charming Doon Valley on one side and the stunning Aglar River Valley and snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas on the other. It is a favourite among the tourists of Mussoorie who come here to witness the spellbinding beauty of the Himalayas and absorb the history of this glorious residence.Visitors will find here the replicas of the instruments that were used by the expedition of Sir Everest for surveying the Himalayas. An attached museum also displays relics of historic maps, manuscripts, etchings, objects and photographs from the 19th century. There is also a library in the complex that provides a platform to gain an insight into the process of Surveying. The house in its present state is owned by a trust and it remains open to the public from April to October. It also serves as a venue to celebrate a number of cultural events throughout the year, such as an annual science exhibition and national workshops. It is also a great place for photographers to capture the mesmerizing views and beauty of the Himalayas.
