Folklore Museum, Mysore Overview

The Folklore Museum in Mysore located in the grounds of the University of Mysore is an incredible collection of the region’s rich cultural heritage. It’s an ideal gateway to discovering the history of Karnataka, ranging from its pioneering founders, stories, cultures and traditions, to its unique and ancient rituals and crafts.

You can explore the museum: ‘Folklore’, which has a unique collection of traditional materials – from elegant and intricate jewellery and saris, to striking mural designs, and metal and wood sculptures, among others. Beginning with an overview of the state’s history, moving on to its folk traditions and to how its culture has shaped its lifestyles, and a range of other topics, the museum provides an insight into life in Karnataka before and after its independence. It is a repository of facts that tell us about our past, present and future. The museum has 3 galleries that feature the folk art, crafts and culture of the state. The first gallery, ‘Folk Heritage’, exhibits and explains the different aspects of the folk art and culture of Karnataka, ranging from the local storytelling, music, dance and theatre, to the intricate artefacts showcasing iconic personalities of the state. The second gallery, ‘Exhibition of Carson Heritage’, presents the intricate Carson designs and craftsmanship, showcasing intricate details of the past. The gallery also displays replicas of traditional Carson implements, instruments, and instruments as well as the traditional costumes and accessories.The third gallery, ‘The Treasury of Arts’, showcases the artisan crafts of Mysore, including the vibrant colours of the Bharavi range, a variety of wood carvings, metal sculptures and gold accessories.

Also on display are photographs from the Mysore Craft Collection and an extensive collection of paintings by Mysore’s renowned painters. From intricate wood carvings to Bharavi artworks, to intricately crafted silver and gold items, the Folklore Museum gives us a glimpse back into the past of Karnataka.
