Sankar Monastery, Leh-Ladakh Overview

Situated in the outskirts of Leh town, the magnificent Sankar Monastery resides as the house of the Head Lama of Ladakh Buddhist Association. Spend a few hours here, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and enjoy some moments of peace amongst the towering mountains of the Himalayas. The monastery is segregated into two parts, namely Tsuglagkhang and Ka- Stone. The Tsuglagkhang houses frescoes, statue of Avalokiteshwara and a major prayer wheel along with numerous images of deities. The prayer wheel is said to be the principal symbols of Tibetan Buddhist, which bring in good fortune and it is believed that just a single spin of the wheel is equivalent to reciting one mantra.This monastery is the place of eclectic architecture and culture portraying the ancient Buddhism in Ladakh. One can observe the Kakkhippu or rupa mandala of hundreds of Yidams, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas around the main hall.

Here one can also experience the Pujas performed by the lamas in strict tradition, offering the same experience as the Lamas do in the temples of Tibet.

Get impressed by the beauty of the frescoes and sculptures symbolizing the great teaching of the Buddha. It is the reflection of traditional culture of the region, ornamented with colorful wall paintings, fine monuments made with wood and metal and beautiful design created with colors.Visitors can also find a replica of Potala Palace inside the monastery, which is situated on the top floor. This palace is a miniature model of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet which is the residence of the Dalai Lama. The Potala Palace here is the place where Ladakh Buddhist Association hosts important meetings and festivals from time to time.
