Mysore Zoo Overview

The Mysore Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in India, founded in 1892 as the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens. This majestic wildlife sanctuary in the heart of Karnataka offers a picturesque setting for an enthralling animal watching experience.

Here, visitors can find an array of species in their natural habitats. From big cats like tigers and lions to a diverse range of primate species, the zoo boasts a collection of over a hundred species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. You can also find rare and endangered species like the black buck, seladang, lion-tailed macaque, trembling short-tailed bat, and Himalayan monal.The zoo spans an area of 300 acres and is home to a variety of exotic animals, from clouded leopards to chimpanzees, sambar deer to blackbucks, and cobras to Malabar giant squirrels. The Mysore Zoo is also home to the country’s first Butterfly Aviary. Kids will love watching the playful gibbons, waddling flamingos, and majestic ostriches. The Animal Display and Interpretation Area provides an educational platform for adults and kids alike. Aside from the impressive wildlife, the gardens also house the Bharat Insect House, with over 2000 species of butterflies and moths.The zoo also features an observation tower for bird watching, an Emerald Pavilion, a Reptiles' House, an Amphibian House, and several sections dedicated to animal education and awareness.
