St. Philomena's Cathedral, Mysore Overview

Located in the historical city of Mysore, St. Philomena's Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in South Asia. Built in the Neo-Gothic style and standing over 300 feet tall, St. Philomena's Cathedral is an impressive and imposing sight, drawing in a large number of visitors from both India and abroad. It was constructed in 1936, by the late Reverend Rene Feuga, on the same site as an earlier, smaller chapel that stood in its place since 1831. The cathedral is renowned for its gorgeous stained glass work, elaborate sculptures and imposing architecture that reflects its European influences. It is home to a variety of impressive sculptures, including a beautiful statue of St.

Philomena blessed by Pope Pius XI in 1933 as well as statues of St.Joseph, Virgin Mary, and St.

Jude. The 36 feet high stained glass window at the back of the main altar is an awe-inspiring sight, depicting St. Philomena and her parents, Dioclesian and Serene. There is also an outdoor shrine dedicated to Marian Apparitions that includes a statute of the Madonna, as well as a bell tower with 10 bells that plays melodious tunes at 5AM and 6PM each day.An attractive healing shrine located within the cathedral does phenomenally well with believers visiting to receive blessings from the same grams from St Philomena that were blessed by the Pope. It also holds a miraculous relic palm branch of the early Christians. The cathedral has come a long way since its construction and is still associated with its touch of religious excellence, inspiring spectators. Its famous backdrops have also acted as a muse for many art and film projects, making it an ideal destination for a quick weekend getaway. Now a primary tourist attraction in Mysore, the St. Philomena's Cathedral offers visitors an incredible experience that is sure to leave lasting memories. From its vibrant stained glass windows to its remarkable sculptures, the cathedral shines a light on the remarkable architectural history and sacred heritage of the region, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to gain a true understanding of the city and its culture.
