Qutub Minar, Delhi Overview

The magnificent and iconic Qutub Minar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Delhi, India.

This 73 metre tall structure is a combination of red and buff sandstone as well as marble, and is an example of Indo-Islamic architecture boasting intricate and delicate stone calligraphy design. Built by Qutub-ud-din Aibak, who was the founder of the Slave Dynasty, the great tower was commissioned in 1193 and completed by 1368. It is believed the minaret was originally constructed to signify the beginning of Muslim rule in the region, while also serving as a monument of victory. However, the full purpose of the tower is still unknown.The Qutub Minar is composed of five distinct stories; upon entering the structure, tourists may immediately take in the beautiful four armed balcony situated at the base. The second storey has a Qu’ranic inscriptions, its verses forming intricate designs around its walls; the third storey features beautiful and intricate Koranic verses carved on marble slabs; the fourth stories offer a uniquely beautiful stone latticework, and the fifth storey of the tower is made of marble and sandstone that provide a stunning view of the region.The ancient monument showcases an expressive Islamic Indian architecture and is one of the most uniquely beautiful structures in the region, often inspiring awe and amazement to many upon its sight.
